The following article, written by Kaityln Carr, appeared in the Edgewater Patch on February 27th.

Over the past six years, Davidsonville photographer Linda McCarthy has raised more than $80,000 for Anne Arundel Medical Center’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) through proceeds raised from her Little Angel’s Calendar.

Despite her fundraising success through her photography company Visual Concepts, McCarthy says it’s the moms of NICU babies that leave her most inspired.

“I love the moms who come in and tell me their NICU stories—some of them have had babies that didn’t survive,” McCarthy said. “They give me strength and I am humbled by all of them.”

McCarthy runs Visual Concepts out of her home in Davidsonville. The company is a boutique studio that specializes in portraits—particularly of babies.

For the last six years, McCarthy has taken time from her busy schedule to create a calendar that raises money for the NICU. The calendar features photos of local babies and is part of a contest to determine the cutest baby.

The project starts by recruiting mothers who want their babies featured in the calendar. McCarthy gathers as many babies as she can and shoots portraits of them wearing angel wings. Then all of the photos go online, and for $1 a vote, the public picks the 13 babies featured in the calendar—one for each month plus the cover.

One would think McCarthy has a special connection to the NICU to spend this much time and energy fundraising for it, but she doesn’t. She said the idea just came to her when she was flipping through AAMC’s newsletter.

“It was really funny because I didn’t know when I started the project who was going to be the recipients,” she said. “I didn’t know anybody who had a baby in NICU—I had no idea. But I believe if you have faith something will come to you and you will know when it is right. I saw the article in the newsletter and thought, ‘That’s it.’”

Each mom who has her baby photographed writes a $100 tax-deductible check to the hospital—in lieu of a session fee. After the photos are posted online it is up to them to make sure their baby receives enough votes to be included in the calendar.

Any baby up to 5-years-old can enter to be in the calendar, and they do not have to be a NICU baby although many are, McCarthy said. She said moms of NICU babies want to be included, not to have their baby’s photo taken, but because they want to give back to the hospital.

While the final project is a joy to look at, McCarthy said it’s the photo shoots that are the most enjoyable for her, especially when she hears the stories of NICU moms.

“They are incredibly strong and I have never felt that they feel sorry for themselves,” McCarthy said. “The love and the support that they give the child has me in tears because I am so humbled by the experience of being with people like that. It’s remarkable.”

Mom’s interested in having their babies photographed for the calendar should contact Linda McCarthy by phone, 410-626-7474 or email at Photography sessions will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 7, 9, 14, and 16. The calendar will be released in June or July.

Here is an article recently posted on the South River Source's Facebook Page written by Mitchelle Stevenson, describing in detail the angel calendar process:

Davidsonville Photographer Looks for Babies to Model for Lil Angels Calendar

For a half-dozen years now, Linda McCarthy of Visual Concepts Photography,in Davidsonville, has been raising money for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Anne Arundel Medical in Annapolis through her “Lil Angels” calendar. Thus far, McCarthy has handed over $70,000. That isn’t a typo. $70K!

Linda McCarthy with last year’s Lil Angels calendar for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

This year she will be doing two calendars. One for the NICU and one for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS)  of Maryland.

The way the fundraiser works is pretty simple for parents—though still a lot of work for McCarthy. Families come in to get a photo of their “Lil Angel,” a boy or girl from birth to age 3 (or up to age 5 for the LLS calendar). Once an appointment is made, McCarthy bedecks the little cuties in knit hats, feathers, beads, straw hats and then photographs them. The parents pay a $100 session fee, which is donated to the charity.

From there, the photos are posted online and families, friends and hospital or LLS patrons get to vote, for $1 each. No personal information about the babies is released to the public. The babies/models with the most votes—and most funds—get a page in the calendar. The most votes overall gets the cover.

Each page of the calendar is one child.

The LLS babies and the NICU babies will each get their own calendar and voting process. Proceeds from the sales of the calendar also go to the charity. The calendars McCarthy is working towards now—2014—will be available for sale at the end of this year.

The LLS calendar will be photographed in four sessions, two sessions will be in Owings, on Jan. 31 and Feb. 7 and two will be in Davidsonville on Feb. 2 and 9. The NICU calendar shoots will take place from mid-February through early March. All of the NICU appointments will be taken for the Davidsonville location.

McCarthy said that she decided to add the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society after one of the models from a previous Lil Angels calendar had a recurrence of leukemia. He was originally diagnosed at age two. He had his picture taken for Lil Angels at age three when his cancer was first in remission. At four, he got sick again. His dad was a match to be a bone marrow donor and now the boy is doing really well.

“He melted my heart,” she said.

As part of the LLS calendar, McCarthy wants to also highlight a dozen stories of children battling the disease.

So, McCarthy takes the photos. The parents may purchase the photos in various packages—although they are not obligated to do so. The photo packages can include limited edition posters, brag books, accordion albums and and custom-designed greeting cards.

McCarthy may end up photographing up to a 100 baby “models.” McCarthy winnows the number down and posts the photos online. From there, the voting begins. After the first week, she posts the leaderboard, then updates it week to week until the fourth week when voting ends and the winners are named.

McCarthy likes to see a healthy competition among the parents, which results in more money for the charities.

McCarthy said that the models for the calendar do not need any previous experience, and they do not need to have a connection to either charity. Simply register by email and then bring on the smiles.

The Owings sessions will be at 100 Painters Mille Road, Suite 800 in Owings. The Davidsonville sessions will be held at 3272 Davidsonville Road in Davidsonville.

Another wonderful, successful and fulfilling year has come to a close!!!  Never in my wildest dreams did I think that moving my studio to my farmhouse in Davidsonville would be the single best thing I ever did within my photography business!!  Nothing delights me more than my little ones who come a calling, fall in love and don't always want to leave!  This beautiful, 100 year old farmhouse/studio has seen many tiny feet come through her doors, heard lots and lots of giggles and smiles and, of course, the occassional cry.  But, the house comes alive with my little subjects and everything seems a bit brighter, a bit happier and just a tad sweeter.  In addition to newborns (we have done many Once Upon A Lifetime babies), we photographed families, high school seniors and even a wedding, which was beautiful!!!  We also photographed for Little House of Flowers, Merkert Interiors and we photographed many corporate business portraits!!  In addition, our photograph was acknowledged in OK Magazine and NBC Today Show website.

But, of course, my pride and joy is the Little Angel Calendar which we launced in 2009 to benefit Anne Arundel Medical Center Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the Mother/Baby Unit.  With your help, we raised over $70,000 (!!!) and I am pleased that the tradition will continue in 2013.

Because of its tremendous success, we are parterning with the local chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to raise funds in honor of our March baby, Matty Wilson who has been battling this dreaded disease.  As of this writing, he is in remission and doing well and it is with that in mind, we want to recognize this little one's fight for his life by launching this newest Little Angel Calendar in January!!!

Here are some photos in review of 2012; thank you for your continued support and we look forward to serving you in 2013!  HAPPY NEW YEAR, EVERYONE!  Make it a good one!!
